How it works
A robocall is any call that plays a recorded message instead of connecting you to a live person. Legitimate robocalls exist (school closures, prescription reminders), but the overwhelming majority of unsolicited recorded calls to consumers are illegal telemarketing or fraud — US regulators receive hundreds of thousands of robocall complaints every month.
Modern robocall operations dial millions of numbers a day using cheap VoIP infrastructure and spoofed caller IDs, often rotating through fresh numbers faster than blocklists can track them. That's why a number with even a handful of recent robocall reports deserves caution.

- Hang up on any recorded voice you didn't ask for; legitimate organizations will write to you.
