How it works
Silent calls are usually a predictive autodialer testing whether your number is answered by a human — a hang-up or dead air means you've been logged as live, and sales or scam calls follow. The one-ring variant ("Wangiri") wants the opposite: it hopes you'll call back a number that routes to a premium rate line billing by the minute.
Neither is harmless. A pattern of silent calls from a number is a strong predictor that it belongs to a dialing operation, which is why they're worth reporting even with nothing to transcribe.
If you get one
- Don't call unknown missed numbers back — especially international ones you don't recognize.
- Let unknown callers go to voicemail; real callers leave messages.
- Report silent calls too — the pattern identifies dialer numbers early.
